THE TRUE VALENTINE, TEXAS

Driving through Valentine, you might think it’s a ghost town.
The population is around 200, plaster crumbles off the old adobe buildings
and most storefronts look like they’ve been closed for decades.

But, like all things in West Texas, there is more to this small town than meets the eye.
That’s why our heart is in Valentine, Texas.

HISTORY OF THE VALENTINE MERCANTILE

The Valentine Mercantile was originally established in 1907 as the Johnson Grocery building and once served as a bustling hub of the community. Valentine residents frequented the mercantile for daily needs such as banking, picking up groceries and even catching the train. When we found this gem, it had sat empty and in disrepair for many years.

Today, there is a fully renovated stage for live music, an old roping arena and horse stalls lining the property. We have a deep respect for the original adobe construction and have preserved many of the historic details—from the stucco walls to the wood floors and the hand-built shelving. The mercantile is rather rustic, but we like to call it our very own “work in progress.” We are excited to, once again, make this a vibrant hub of the community, at least one day a year.
